Three years ago, Sudhanshu Kumar (45) and his fiancé, Maria (44) decided they’d had enough of the English weather and it was the warmer climate of Australia that most appealed. Although raised in the Himalayas, Sudhanshu had spent many years in England, having trained there as a physician and prior to migrating, he lined up work here as a GP.

The couple settled to the north of Sydney and are delighted to have recently purchased their first property in Australia, in the Lake Macquarie area near Newcastle. These proud new Aussie residents were helped through the process by financial planner, Theo Holland and credit adviser, Carol O’Shea.

Dr Kumar and his fiancé had been searching for the right property for about a year and turning to Theo for assistance in the process made good sense. Sudhanshu first met Theo soon after arriving in Australia at a medical education meeting in Newcastle. As a Brit and married to a doctor himself, Theo understands the motivation for moving here as well as Dr Kumar’s busy working life as a medico. Theo can also appreciate the different nuances in purchasing a home in the UK verse doing so here in Australia.

Sudhanshu, who now proudly calls Theo a friend says, “he has always been helpful and we welcome his guidance. Theo made the effort to come to us personally on various occasions and alleviated the doubts we had about our finances. He is a good financial adviser and we value his recommendations.”

Sudhanshu also has high praise for Carol. “Carol was fantastic. She would take the time to call or contact me when it best suited me which is something I’ve not seen anyone else do whilst I’ve been in Australia. Carol made a number of offers on our behalf and I know she was able to secure a competitive market rate for us. She put in a lot of effort so everything would go smoothly at our end. I found Carol to be very thorough. She knew exactly what she was doing and I would recommend her to anyone,” he says.

Whilst it’s only been a matter of weeks since the couple moved into their Tingira Heights home, already they love the sense of peace and quiet the home brings. The large, 6-bedroom property with two separate lounge areas that backs onto a reservoir, is the ideal spot to switch off from their busy working lives (Maria, an accountant by trade, works in the same medical practice as her fiancé). Having a home to call their own here in Australia has also resulted in a new addition – their rescue pet, Wicked, a Staffy x Maltese Terrier adopted the day after moving in.

Dr Kumar is thoroughly enjoying life in his adopted country as well as his role as a GP. The diversity of patients that come through the door makes work satisfying and “always full of surprises”. A working day means having to sometimes manage, “anything and everything”. But when he’s off duty and the last of those boxes are unpacked, Sudhanshu and Maria will most likely be found bushwalking or taking their new fluffy friend to the beach. The nine mile stretch of pristine coastline at Redhead Beach is one of their favourite spots.

The couple are settling in well to their relatively new country and looking ahead, hope for continued happiness.  Professionally speaking, Dr Kumar wishes to continue to progress, develop and “do justice to all of the patients I see”. Sudhanshu’s dedication and passion for his work is to be admired, as is the bold decision to move countries and start life anew. For Sudhanshu though, it’s quite straight-forward,

“This is a wonderful place to settle down. You can guarantee good weather and I think the people are much nicer too. I love it here.”
